cats v. dogs. a battle as old as time itself. upon reflection, cats totally get the short end of the stick. why is it perceived to be cooler to have a dog as opposed to a cat? i mean, i think dogs are great but i'm quite partial to kitties as well. all those who speak ill of cats are just insecure - a dog's affections are easy to attain but a cat you must woo. it is a delicate battle of will, intellect and personality. sure a dog will roll over, but will he look you in the eye and wordlessly challenge you?
ok, let's look at it this way. all the pros are in blue and the cons are in red. keep in mind that this is a limited list. just for the purposes of our exposition here.

barking
can't be left alone

cuddly
self-sufficient
smarter
'difficult' to train
indoor animal
stand-offish
ok so it's pretty clear that cats and dogs are completely unlike. so much so that they are complementary. it's like trying to compare apples and oranges. in the end, it's best to have one of each. perfect.

Many people will talk about how great cats are, because it is hard to win their love, and they will "wordlessly challenge you" and so on. While I can see how someone might be proud of their ability to woo such an animal, I'd rather focus my energy on wooing various other things in my life. Such as my partner, family, boss, etc. When I come home from a long day at work, I don't want to have to be challenged by my cat that is in a snooty mood, I want to rough-house with my loving doggy.
However, there are cats, like Oliver, that were very dog-like, and playful, affectionate, as well as being of sub-par intelligence, and these were some of the reasons he will be missed so much.
But you're right, owning both a dog and cat (assuming they snuggle together) is the best of all worlds.
ouch. i didn't say anything bad about dogs. i was just exposing the cosmic unfairness towards cats.
Dogs are better, this is just common knowledge. But what I find interesting are cases like Oliver's where the cat behaves like a dog - or a dog who has some catlike tendencies (Scout for example, will rub against our legs, like a cat.) Is this in face dogs and cats behaving like the other species or have we simply pigeon-holed their behaviors so drastically that we can't recognize them as unique to the animals themselves and not just the species. OK, obnoxious pondering over :)
